OXFORD TOWNSHIP -- The train cars on U.S. 36 have again come to life after more than six years of quiet.
An Internet search brought the Justin and Stacy Pettit family from Zanesville to Coshocton County.
The couple operates an at-home business making reproduction antique furniture they sell wholesale to dealers around the country.
"We were searching for a house on the Internet and chose this area," Stacy Pettit said. "We could be anywhere."
They learned of the opportunity to refurbish the train cars a couple of months after moving to Coshocton. After months of hard work and over 63 gallons of
paint, the trains opened for the public.
Four of the cars are filled with items like metal lawn sculptures, rugs, furniture, knick knacks, creative blankets, soaps, candles, kitchen linens and antiques.
Some of the vendors include Hartstone Pottery, and Diva's Designs. Pettit said they try to focus on America-made products, with an emphasis on Ohio
vendors.
One of the rooms has a selection of handmade wooden toys that were made in Ohio.
"These are unique things your children can play with safely," Pettit said.
Norma Koontz and Gil Hunter live nearby and frequent the Junction, so they took some time this week to browse the Train Shops.
"I'm really glad to see the cars open again," Koontz said. "There were a lot of interesting things, and she should do well."
The train cars have been closed for several years.
The five train cars were moved there in 1979 and 1980. Two of them were former offices of the St. Regis Paper Co. later owned by Mad Marshall Jacobs
who parked them along County Road 1A.
"We're excited about them being open," he said. "They've got some great ideas."
The business plans to offer some community events and the first of those is already being planned.
The first Crafts on the Tracks will be held Memorial Day weekend, and Pettit would like to fill the outdoor area with vendors as well.
She plans to have some type of musical entertainment and hopes for some unique vendors. Other events could be Easter egg hunts or Christmas caroling.
"So many people are excited about this and it makes me feel good to be a part of it," Pettit said.
